Depression Among Undergraduate Students in Pakistan
In Pakistan, many undergraduate students face significant challenges, resulting in depression and overthinking about their futures. A major reason for their struggles lies in the education system, which heavily emphasizes theoretical courses that often lack relevance to real-world careers. As a result, graduates struggle to find jobs aligned with their fields of study, leading to feelings of helplessness and frustration.
Adding to these difficulties is the pressure to support themselves and their families financially during their studies. Many students work tirelessly to balance academic responsibilities with part-time jobs. Despite their efforts, they often encounter repeated failures, which can lead to feelings of despair.
Another contributing factor is the social and familial expectations placed on students, including pressures to succeed, sacrifice personal goals, or delay relationships for career aspirations. These compounded stresses leave students feeling isolated and hopeless, sometimes leading them to contemplate extreme measures like self-harm or suicide.
Solutions to Address Student Depression
1. Reform the Education System:
Introduce more practical and skill-based courses to better prepare students for the job market.
2. Increase Career Counseling: Universities should provide career guidance and mentorship programs to help students explore opportunities aligned with their interests.
3. Mental Health Support:
Offer counseling services to support students dealing with stress, anxiety, or depression.
4. Job Placement Assistance:
Establish strong university-industry linkages to ensure graduates find relevant jobs.
5. Community Awareness:
Encourage families and communities to reduce unrealistic expectations and support students emotionally and financially where possible.
